He Tied Knot With Wife Second Time, Once When Married, Second When Going On Bicycle: Corona Chronicle #005

On March 31st amid the Coronavirus lockdown, a 65 year old man Arivazhagan who earned his bread by working daily and has hand to mouth existence was looking at his wife.

They had no money to hire a cab and neither could they afford a private hospital. Manjula, his wife who is 60 years old and is a cancer patient and her treatment was in process for the same.

They lived in Kumbakonam district in Tamil Nadu and the hospital they visited for chemotherapy was JIPMER hospital in Puducherry.

The man decided that he somehow has to take his wife for her treatment further and finally took out his bicycle and to ensure that his wife does not fall from the bicycle, used a rope to bind her to him.

They began their journey somewhere at 4:45 am and reached their destination at about 10:15 pm. They took a single break on their way which was 130 km for 2 hours so that they could rest before continuing their journey further.

When they arrived at the hospital, they saw that the outpatient department (OPD) and the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) of the hospital were shut because of the lockdown too.

The nationwide lockdown has affected the lower strata of the society in India more than anyone can believe or even imagine.

However, the hospital officials heard about the journey and the story which was all over the news and helped them by ensuring that the lady gets her treatment on time and were conducted normally.

When the couple was about to leave, the doctors in the hospital made them realize that humanity still exists. The doctors pooled in money, an amount of rupees 6,300 and arranged an ambulance for the couple to return back home safely.

The doctors also gave them enough medicines for a month so that the couple does not have to come again during the lockdown and provided some extra money to Arivazhagan for their expenses on the way.

Arivazhagan tied the knot with Manjula for the second time, one was when they got married, and the other was when he tied her with himself on the bicycle proving that they could never be separated.
